As wondrous and dynamic as the experience of Gospel renewal is, that experience requires a standard to maintain its integrity. That standard is the Word of God as proclaimed in all its fullness in Jesus Christ and the written text of the Bible. A shorthand articulation of this standard is found in the church’s three universal and historic creeds (Apostles’, Nicene, Athanasian) and the confessions (Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession, Canons of Dort) of the denomination with which our community is affiliated, the Christian Reformed Church of North America. Maintaining this standard gives us room to experience Gospel renewal in all its fullness, while remaining appropriately tethered to the historic tradition of the church that goes all the way back to the Word through whom God has made and redeemed our lives and this world.
